In the evening, when the work day is over and the fun begins, the back streets and alleys of Tokyo's Shinjuku district develop a special kind of energy. Friends and strangers sit shoulder to shoulder in tiny bars and restaurants where they enjoy good food, drinks and company before catching their train home. Modern and orderly urban areas can seem soulless and alienating but the antiquated alleyways of Shinjuku exude old-world charm and are a haven of hospitality. These photographs offer a glimpse into this unique district and the community of people who work and play there.
